The Rivanna District mostly comprises the Eastern side of Albemarle County. The city of Charlottesville lies in this eastern section although it is relatively central to the county as a whole.
Albemarle County was created in 1744, and was named in honor of the Second Earl of Albemarle, Willem Anne van Keppel. He was also at that time the Governor of Virginia. The county since then has been divided into the separate counties of Amherst and Buckingham. Charlottesville is the county seat even though it is an independent city and legally separate from the county.
The area is centered on the Rivanna River, which flows through Fluvanna and Albemarle counties. This river was named for Queen Anne of England. It is also one of the most important centers of recreational activities in the region. The Rivanna Greenbelt Trail, located on the border between the city and the county, provides ample trails to exercise with or without canine friends. The banks of the river are picturesque; an entire day can be spent by simply sitting on the banks, enjoying the mild breeze and lovely view.
This river has played a fascinating and long role in the region’s history. It was used extensively for navigation at one time, which led to the prosperity and development of the places situated on its banks. In Charlottesville, there is a bridge that crosses the river called “Free Bridge.” It was so named because this bridge was the first non-tolling crossing that led into Charlottesville. The river was a major source of transportation and industry until the advent of railroads in the 1800s. Since then the river has become a quiet place and offers its utility only in the various recreational activities it provides to the residents of this area.
The Rivanna River marks the border between the City of Charlottesville and Eastern Albemarle County. Designated as one of the growth areas by the county, ample housing opportunities abound. For those looking for townhouse living, Carriage Hill offers apartments, condos, and townhouses. Seniors will find age directed housing available at the Cottages at Jefferson Heights.
Along with the growth area designation comes many and varied housing developments in Eastern Albemarle: Fontata, where homeowners share a pool and clubhouse; Ashcroft where views reign supreme from Summit Ridge; Glenmore, a gated community catering to golfers and tennis players; and finally Keswick, offering custom homes on estate parcels sited on a golf course with its own boutique luxury hotel on site owned and operated by Orient Express Hotels Trains and Cruises.
Eastern Albemarle is also home to many of the most beautiful equestrian estates in the state. These historic homes and stables are rarely available, but when they are, frequently trade in excess of $10 million. However, many smaller farmettes still suitable for the equestrian set are available throughout Eastern Albemarle. The rural nature of Albemarle is well pronounced in this part of the county, and the rolling Southwest Mountain range provides an excellent backdrop of the view, the history, and the people.
